Are your walls in need of some TLC? Cracks and uneven surfaces are difficult to cover up with a lick of paint. If you want to give your walls or ceilings a smooth finish that’s all ready to be painted, then the chances are you’ll want to get them skimmed. Skim plastering is the ultimate makeover for your walls – allowing you to wave goodbye to lumps and bumps and say hello to smooth, even surfaces, primed for decorating.
Skimming is the most common form of internal plastering. Frequently people refer to skimming as ‘having my house plastered’ or ‘having the ceiling re-plastered’. In general terms “Skimming” is the term used when the finished top coat of plaster is applied over an already smooth and even wall, such as plasterboard or existing plaster.
This is essentially a method of plastering which involves adding a thin, final layer of finishing plaster to give surfaces that sought-after smooth effect (ready for painting or papering).

Re-Skim Walls, Over-Skim Artex Ceilings, Replaster Ceilings
Re-Skimming Walls
Looking to give your walls a fresh new look? Providing the existing wall and plaster is sound, re-skimming might be the most efficient and cost-effective way to rejuvenate your walls. Re-skimming is when a new coat of skim plaster is applied over existing plastered walls to give it a nice new smooth finish. It is generally used when the base is still very solid but the topcoat of plaster is looking tired and beginning to flake off.
In the majority of cases, a re-skim is all that is needed to bring the room back to life.
Over-Skimming Artex Ceilings
Homeowners loved Artex ceilings back in the 1970s and 80s, which is why there are so many of those plaster dimples and swirls around today. Many people are happy to live with their Artex ceilings but others are determined to rid their home of them. At Newman Plastering we have years of experience plastering over Artex.
Plastering over Artex ceilings is no different to normal plastering – but it is one of the hardest aspects of skimming. If you have patterned Artex, it’s possible to coat it with PVA to achieve a flat surface, and then skim it – providing the pattern isn’t too prominent. Stippled Artex can’t be treated effectively in this way and will require over-boarding first.
If You Have No Asbestos in Your Artex Ceiling
There are three options for getting rid of Artex if you know it’s asbestos-free:
- Remove the Artex. This is, without doubt, the most expensive option as artex is hard to shift.
- Scrape and Skim. If you have swirls rather than dimples it may be possible to scrape off the patterning to leave a smooth surface. This can then be covered with PVA and followed up with a skim coat of plaster.
- False Ceiling. Dimpled, or stippled Artex can be covered over with a false ceiling made of drylining plasterboard. You end up with a smooth surface to work with, but your ceiling height is slightly lower.
